Opening of the first Egyptian school for the integration of special needs in 2022
The June 30 Association, operating under the Egyptian Ministry of Education, announced the opening of a new school specializing in providing educational services to children with special needs. The June 30 Association is an affiliation of schools that operates under the direction of the Egyptian Ministry of Education.
This school aims to facilitate the integration of children with special needs into the general school system by the next school year 2022-2023.
The new school will create curricula and programs tailored to the psychological, health and educational needs of children, with particular emphasis on the early stages of childhood development.
The increased inclusion and integration of children with special needs into the mainstream school system aligns with the national strategies set out by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to ensure the provision of “full education rights for all in a human and healthy environment.
Tariq Shawky, Egypt’s Minister of Education, has given his full support to the initiative which is committed to providing the highest quality educational services in accordance with international standards and regulations. On-site teachers, psychologists and social workers will also benefit from training and capacity building programs to ensure they meet international requirements for special education professionals.
The services and programs provided will also cater to families of children with special needs. Special education professionals will be responsible for training parents on how to provide the necessary care for their children to ensure their academic success; this includes speaking sessions, behavior modification, and assignment of household chores.
Hala Ghoniem, a prominent special education professional, is currently in charge of supervising the school. Ghoniem said the school aims to provide three phases of preparation. There will be an initial preparation period, followed by a partial integration phase, and finally a full integration phase to slowly help with adaptation to the mainstream school system over a set period of time.
The school campus will be equipped with a research center dedicated to improving educational programs for children with special needs to ensure quick and seamless reintegration into the mainstream school system. There will also be an on-campus kitchen to deliver specialized meals with tailored nutritional needs with the aim of improving physical and mental well-being.
Although the exact location of the school has not been disclosed, construction is currently underway.
